You can even mix fabrics.

The secret is making it look intentional.
The Bridesmaid Dress They’ll Actually Wear Again
Yes, we know.
Every bridesmaid dress claims this.
Then somehow it spends the next eight years hanging inside a garment bag.
But separates, slip dresses, beautifully cut midi dresses and less obviously “bridesmaid” designs genuinely have a better chance of another outing.
Ask yourself:
Would I buy this if there wasn’t a wedding involved?
If the answer is absolutely not, your bridesmaids may be thinking the same thing.
Grooms Are Allowed Fashion Too
We’re officially retiring the idea that the groom’s entire fashion contribution is deciding between a grey suit and a slightly different grey suit.
Autumn menswear is brilliant.
Deep navy.
Forest green.
Chocolate brown.
Burgundy.
Textured wool.
Velvet jackets.
Patterned ties.
Interesting waistcoats.
Excellent shoes.
The groom doesn’t need to compete with the bride.
But he is allowed to look like he knew there was a wedding happening.
The Velvet Jacket
Hello, autumn.
A velvet dinner jacket is one of those pieces that immediately creates occasion.
Deep green, burgundy, navy and black are particularly strong options for evening celebrations.
If a full velvet suit feels like too much, keeping the trousers simple lets the jacket have its moment.
And yes, we absolutely support a groom changing into one for the evening reception.
Brides aren’t the only people allowed an outfit reveal.
The Other Half of the Wedding Party
Bridesman?
Groomswoman?
Best woman?
Man of honour?
Excellent.
Modern wedding parties don’t always fit neatly into traditional labels, and neither should their wardrobes.
Instead of starting with gender and deciding what somebody is supposed to wear, start with the overall visual story.
Colours, fabrics and accessories can connect people without requiring everyone to wear exactly the same type of outfit.
The photographs will survive.

Mothers of the Couple
Can we have a moment for the mums?
Wedding fashion has traditionally offered mothers of the bride and groom two choices:
Very sensible dress.
Or:
Hat capable of receiving satellite television.
There is another way.
A beautiful trouser suit, modern midi dress, jumpsuit, dramatic coat or colourful tailoring can all feel appropriately special without turning somebody into a wedding stereotype.
And if she wants the enormous hat?
Give that woman her moment.
The Autumn Wedding Guest
Wedding guests have a surprisingly complicated job.
Look fabulous.
Don’t look bridal.
Respect the dress code.
Dress for the weather.
Potentially spend several hours outside.
Still look good in photographs.
And somehow select an outfit six months before knowing whether Britain has decided October is summer or winter.
Layers are your friend.
Beautiful coats, tailored jackets, wraps and scarves can become part of the outfit rather than emergency equipment.
Can Guests Wear Black?
Yes.

Actually, let’s elaborate.
Black can look incredibly elegant at an autumn or evening wedding.
Style it intentionally rather than as though you’re heading directly from the ceremony to a business conference.
Jewellery, texture, colourful accessories and interesting silhouettes make all the difference.
Individual couples may have specific dress requests, of course.
When in doubt, ask.
And What About Red?
Also yes.
There are endless little wedding “rules” circulating online about colours guests supposedly aren’t allowed to wear.
Traditions vary between families and cultures, so context matters.
But there’s no universal wedding police waiting behind the venue curtains with a colour chart.
Respect the couple.
Respect cultural expectations.
Then get dressed.
Children at Autumn Weddings
Children’s formalwear can become unnecessarily complicated very quickly.
They need to look lovely.
They also need to be able to move.
And eat.
And sit on the floor despite everybody specifically asking them not to.
Soft fabrics, comfortable shoes and removable layers win.
If the flower girl spends the reception running around in sparkly trainers, we consider that excellent decision-making.
Accessories Are Where the Fun Starts
This is particularly useful when you’re coordinating a wedding party without making everyone match.
Repeated colours or details can bring completely different outfits together.
Think:
Pocket squares.
Hair ribbons.
Jewellery.
Boutonnieres.
Shoes.
Bags.
Ties.
Flowers.
You don’t need twelve people wearing identical outfits to create a cohesive photograph.
Sometimes one repeated raspberry ribbon does more work than twelve matching dresses.

You already know what’s coming.
There isn’t one.
Your wedding party isn’t a set of props.
They’re people you love enough to ask them to stand beside you on one of the biggest days of your life.
Let them look good.
Let them feel comfortable.
Let them retain some personality.

Because the best wedding photographs don’t look beautiful because everybody was wearing exactly the same shade of dusty rose.
